The print

This is the loud one. Fuchsia and blue hold the ground in near-equal measure, small floral sprigs fill the space between the paisleys, and touches of gold and white keep the two strong colours from flattening into each other.

The density is deliberate - the blocks are stamped close, so from a distance the set reads as a rich violet, and only up close do the separate colours resolve.

Wearing it

A print this saturated wants nothing else competing with it: plain juttis, a single bangle stack, hair off the face. It is the piece for a mehendi, a Diwali lunch or a day wedding, and it holds up just as well as an office kurta when you cut the dupatta out of the styling.

Most block-print suits at this price are cotton. This is silk, with the lustre and drape that comes with it, and the same genuine hand-stamped craft.

No two lengths of this print are identical. The blocks are aligned by eye, so the repeat wanders a little - the signature of work done by hand.

Bhagalpur has printed and finished cloth for generations, and this set comes out of that workshop tradition: carved blocks, one colour at a time, each block waiting for the last to dry. A print this dense means the artisan has to line up fuchsia against blue over and over without a guide rail. Where the two meet you will find a hair of overlap here and a hair of daylight there - the honest record of a hand working down a table.

1. Is this print done by hand or by machine?
Every metre is stamped by hand with hand-carved wooden blocks - no screen and no machine printing. The slight variation in how the fuchsia and blue meet is the proof of it.

2. Will these bright colours bleed when I wash the suit?
The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash. Dry clean it once to begin with, then a gentle cold hand wash keeps the fuchsia and blue where they belong.

3. What is included and how much fabric do I get?
Three unstitched pieces: top 2.5 m and bottom 2.5 m at 44 to 45 inches wide, and a dupatta 2.5 m at 35 to 36 inches. Enough to stitch up to 4XL for straight kurta sets.

4. Is the dupatta matching or contrast?
The dupatta carries the same fuchsia and blue paisley as the top and bottom, finished with wide horizontal bands at the edges, so the set reads as one piece.
