The print

The floral repeat is dense and even, and the two contrast colours give the surface a slightly textured look from a distance - closer to a woven texture than a flat print. The dupatta breaks from the repeat with a single decorative band and fringed edges.

Some flowers carry more ink than their neighbours, and rows sit a hair apart. Hand block printing always does - it is the evidence, not the defect.

Two contrast colours mean two carved blocks and two passes down the same length. In Bhagalpur the grey is laid first, then the white is set into it by eye, flower after flower, all the way along the top. The workshops here have printed silk this way for generations, and the small unevenness that comes from a hand rather than a roller is exactly what tells you which one made your fabric.

1. Will the pink bleed onto the white flowers when I wash it?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash. Dry clean it the first time, then a gentle cold hand wash in shade-dried condition keeps it looking new.

3. How do I know the print is not machine made?
Look at the repeat closely. Hand block printing lays each motif with a carved wooden block, so the ink is deeper on some flowers and the rows sit slightly unevenly. A machine print is identical from end to end.

4. Does it need a lining?
No, the silk is opaque and stitches up without one. Adding a lining is optional and only changes the weight and fall.

5. What if the shade is not what I expected?
Screens vary, so a shade can look a little different in person. If the colour or the quality is not what you hoped for, you can exchange it.
