The split

Half the set stays plain, saturated blue. The other half carries dense floral and linear geometric blocks in red, white and yellow, cut off cleanly by a straight solid red hem and a broad printed panel running vertically down the length.

The asymmetry is the point: an unbroken blue kurta body, then all the pattern gathered where it shows. Give the printed panel to the dupatta and one side of the kurta, and the set reads bold from a distance without ever looking busy.

The silk

Katan silk carries a quiet lustre that lifts the flat blue, and it drapes rather than stands away from the body. It is opaque enough to wear unlined, and light enough at 600 to 650 g for all three pieces to sit through a full office day.

Styling

Bright blue against red wants silver or oxidised jewellery rather than gold, and it carries daily and office wear as comfortably as a daytime function. Ask your tailor to keep the red hem band whole along the kurta edge instead of cutting through it.

Small shifts in register where one impression meets the next are the block printer's signature, not a fault.

On a long padded table in Bhagalpur, a printer lays out the blue silk and begins at one edge. The floral block is inked, set down, lifted and moved a hand's width along, and the row grows until it reaches the far end of the length. Then the red border block follows it back down the other way.

Nothing is projected or measured out; the line is judged by eye, one impression at a time. That is why the panel edge wanders by a hair in places and the red reads a shade deeper where the artisan pressed harder. A screen would flatten all of it into sameness. The hand leaves evidence of itself, and this cloth carries it.

1. Will the red bleed into the blue when I wash it?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash, and it stays colour-fast in the washes after that. Dry clean it the first time, then a gentle cold hand wash is all it needs.

2. Is the print genuinely hand done or is it screen printed?
It is genuinely hand block printed. Artisans in Bhagalpur ink hand-carved wooden blocks and stamp the floral and geometric motifs onto the silk one impression at a time. Look where two impressions meet along the red panel and you will find slight shifts in spacing and depth of colour. A screen or machine print never shows them.

3. What does the unstitched set include?
Three pieces: a top of 2.5 m at 44 to 45 inches wide, a bottom of 2.5 m at 44 to 45 inches wide, and a dupatta of 2.5 m at 35 to 36 inches wide. Together they weigh 600 to 650 g.

4. Can it be stitched for a larger size?
Yes, up to 4XL for a straight kurta set, and the length can be customised for larger sizes. The 2.5 m on each piece also gives your tailor room to plan the cut around the printed panel.

5. Do I need to add a lining or aster under the blue?
No. The fabric is opaque on its own, so no lining is needed. Some customers still add one purely for a more structured, elevated finish, but that is a styling choice.

6. How soon is it dispatched?
It is dispatched the next working day. Every metre is printed by hand, but the pieces are ready rather than made to order, so handmade does not mean a long wait.

7. What if the blue is not the shade I expected?
Screens render colour differently, so a saturated blue can look cooler or brighter than it does in the hand. If the shade or the quality is not loved, an exchange is available.
