The print

The floral repeat is small and tightly laid across the top, with the black outlines giving the flowers definition against so strong a ground. The dupatta changes pace with horizontal bands of flowing linework and small floral clusters, and one broad band of the same linework sits low on the length.

The black outline occasionally sits a shade off the pink beneath it. Two blocks, two passes, one pair of hands - that small offset is the craft showing itself.

This print takes more than one block. The pink flower is laid first, then a second carved block brings the black outline down over it, and the printer must land that second impression on the first by eye. In the Bhagalpur workshops that work is done standing at a long table, moving down the length metre by metre, the rhythm of the hand setting the pace rather than any machine.

Will such a bright yellow fade or bleed in the wash?
It is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash. Dry clean it the first time, then a gentle cold hand wash, drying in shade, keeps the yellow strong.

Is the fabric see-through in a light colour like this?
No. The silk is opaque, so a kurta can be stitched without a lining or aster. A lining is optional only if you want a heavier drape.

What does the set include and how much can it be stitched to?
A top, a bottom and a dupatta, each 2.5 metres long - the top and bottom 44-45 inches wide, the dupatta 35-36 inches. It stitches up to 4XL and the length can be customised.

Is the pink flower printed by hand?
Yes. Each flower is stamped with a hand-carved wooden block and the black outline is a second impression laid over it by hand, which is why the two occasionally sit a fraction apart.

What if the shade is not what I expected?
