The contrast

The coral is printed lightly, with small horizontal dash-like shapes catching the light in a subtle metallic finish. It is a quiet fabric, meant to be worn as a plain-reading kurta.

The black piece does the opposite. Intricate floral and vine work covers it at high density, gathered into a wide, ornate, multi-layered border panel that ends in a fringe. Two pieces, two entirely different intentions.

Wearing the pairing

A coral kurta under a black bordered dupatta is the easiest formal pairing in this palette, and it holds gold jewellery well for an evening or a day wedding. Keep the salwar plain from the coral so the black stays the focus.

The vine work varies subtly from repeat to repeat, which is how a hand-carved block prints.

An ornate border is the most demanding thing a block printer does. It is not one block but several, each carrying a layer of the pattern, and they have to be laid over one another in the right order along the same edge without the layers sliding apart.

In Bhagalpur that alignment is judged by eye. The artisan sets the first layer down the length of the black silk, comes back with the second, and closes the panel at the fringe. On the coral piece the work is the opposite kind: hundreds of small dashes, light and quick, spaced by hand. Look closely and the vines shift a hair from repeat to repeat. That is what tells you a person made it.

Will the black bleed onto the coral in the wash?
