The indigo field

Small paisleys cover a deep indigo ground from end to end, broken only by linear decorative bands in pale blue with touches of yellow, green and off-white. The overall read is almost monochrome, with the accents doing quiet work up close.

The dupatta finishes in fringe, which is the detail that saves this from being a plain dark set.

Wearing it

Indigo is the easiest dark to wear in warm weather because it never looks heavy. Pair it with silver or terracotta jewellery and a pale blue or off-white inner. It carries office wear through to an evening out with no change of styling.

Deep indigo block prints are common in cotton and scarce on silk - this is the same craft with drape and sheen behind it.

Look closely and the paisley repeat drifts a little. That drift is the hand behind the block.

The indigo goes down first and covers everything; the paisleys and the pale bands are stamped over it, block by block, in Bhagalpur. Dark grounds punish sloppy work, so the artisan has to keep pressure even for the full length or the print goes patchy. The fringe at the dupatta ends is finished by hand once the cloth is dry.

The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash. Dry clean it the first time, then a gentle cold hand wash keeps it safe.

2. Is the dupatta plain or finished at the ends?
It carries the same paisley print and is finished with fringe at the ends, so nothing needs adding after stitching.

3. How can I be sure it is hand block printed?
The paisley repeat drifts slightly across the length, which happens because the block is placed by hand. Screen and machine prints repeat identically every time.

4. What are the piece lengths?
