Blue on blue

Bright blue against light blue with a darker blue accent, so the whole set stays within one family and reads calm despite the density of the pattern. The top carries an all-over repeat, the dupatta is laid out with a rectangular border of linear geometric bands around central motifs, and the bottom is left unprinted.

The plain bottom is the reason this set works for office wear - the pattern stays above the waist, where you want it.

Fabric and fit

Katan silk drapes gracefully, holds a quiet sheen and is opaque enough to stitch without a lining. The set weighs 600 to 650 g.

Stitch the printed piece as a straight kurta and the plain one as trousers or a salwar; silver or oxidised jewellery suits the tonal blue better than gold. Hand-blocked tribal geometry usually turns up in cotton - having it on Katan silk is what makes this set carry into formal wear.

Look along the border bands: the geometry is aligned by eye, not by machine.

Geometry is unforgiving. A mandala block has to close its circle at every impression, and the linear bands that frame the dupatta must meet at the corners, all judged by a printer's eye against the last press. In Bhagalpur these blues are built up in stages across the Katan silk - the field first, the dark accent last - while the bottom length is deliberately left blank. Restraint takes as much decision-making as pattern does.

1. Is the bottom piece printed or plain?
The bottom piece is plain. The top carries an all-over tribal and mandala repeat and the dupatta is bordered with linear geometric bands, which keeps the pattern above the waist when the set is stitched.

2. Will the darker blue bleed into the lighter blue?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash. Dry clean it the first time, then a gentle cold hand wash keeps it looking new.

3. How can I tell it is hand block printed?
Look closely at the repeats. Every motif is stamped from a hand-carved wooden block, so the spacing shifts a little from one impression to the next and the colour sits slightly differently in each. A screen or machine print gives a flawless, identical repeat; this one never does, and that is your proof it was printed by hand.

4. What are the measurements?
Three unstitched pieces: a top of 2.5 metres and a bottom of 2.5 metres, both 44 to 45 inches wide, and a dupatta of 2.5 metres at 35 to 36 inches wide.

5. Can it be stitched to a larger size?
