The fish print

The top runs the fish edge to edge; the dupatta places just a few of them, sparsely, so the two pieces sit at completely different tempos. A horizontal zigzag border closes the hem of the top and the edge of the dupatta.

White and cream carry the ground, with green, black and peach doing all the work - which is why this set reads light and summery rather than formal.

Wearing and caring

Katan silk gives the cream a soft lustre and a graceful drape, and the full set weighs 600 to 650 g. It stitches to 4XL, and the length can be customised.

This is the easiest daily and office piece in the collection: a straight kurta, flat sandals, small silver studs. Save the sparse dupatta for the days you want the fish noticed rather than assumed.

Each little fish is a separate impression, so the shoal is never twice the same.

The fish block is tiny, which sounds easier and is not - a small block has to be inked lightly and pressed thousands of times to cover 2.5 metres of Katan silk without the shapes clogging. In Bhagalpur the printer covers the top edge to edge, then changes rhythm entirely for the dupatta, placing single fish with long gaps between them. The zigzag border is a separate block again, stamped along the hem to close the piece.

1. Will the green and black bleed onto the cream ground?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash. Dry clean it the first time, then a gentle cold hand wash keeps it looking new.

2. Is the dupatta printed the same way as the top?
No. The top carries the fish edge to edge in a dense all-over repeat, while the dupatta places the same motif sparsely, with a zigzag border at the edge. The contrast between the two is intentional.

3. Does a pale fabric like this need a lining?
No. The fabric is opaque, so no lining or aster is needed. Some customers still add one to elevate the drape, but that is a styling choice rather than a requirement.

4. What is in the set?
Three unstitched pieces: a top of 2.5 metres and a bottom of 2.5 metres, both 44 to 45 inches wide, and a dupatta of 2.5 metres at 35 to 36 inches wide.

5. How should I wash it?
Dry clean the first wash, then a gentle cold hand wash at home and dry it in the shade.

6. What if the colours are not what I expected?
