The colour

The gradient is the whole point of this set. Green and turquoise give way to peach and yellow, with navy and pale grey turning up in the small leaf vines that run over the top.

Printing over a gradient is unusual: the same colour has to read against several grounds, so the block work is kept small and continuous rather than large and placed.

Wearing it

Cut this one so the gradient runs vertically down the kurta and you get length. Keep the bottom from the quieter end of the range, and let the tasselled dupatta finish it. It is bright enough for a daytime function and calm enough for the office.

Multi-shade ombre is normally a dyed-and-digital-printed effect. Getting it under a genuine hand block print, on silk, is the reason to choose this piece.

Small shifts in the print, a motif set a little off its neighbour, a shade that deepens where the block pressed twice: these are the marks of a hand at work, not flaws in the cloth.

Every block printer works with a fixed vocabulary of carved wooden blocks and an open choice of where they land. On an ombre length that choice matters more than usual, because the same impression has to sit convincingly on turquoise and again on peach. The Bhagalpur artisans work the vine in a small scale for exactly that reason, striking it down the cloth by hand and letting the ground do the shifting.

1. Do the ombre shades bleed into each other when washed?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash, so the turquoise, peach and yellow stay where they are. Dry clean it once before first wear, then hand wash gently in cold water.

2. How do I know the print is done by hand and not by machine?
Look along the repeat. Hand block printing leaves small register shifts where one block meets the next, and slight variation in how much colour each impression carries. A screen or machine print repeats identically every time; this one does not.

3. What does this unstitched set include?
Three pieces: a 2.5 m top and a 2.5 m bottom, both 44 to 45 inches wide, and a 2.5 m dupatta 35 to 36 inches wide. Nothing is stitched, so your tailor cuts the silhouette you want.

4. Is there enough fabric for a larger size?
Yes. With 2.5 m in each piece the set can be stitched up to 4XL, and the length can be customised for a longer kurta or fuller silhouette.

5. Does it need a lining or aster?
No. The silk is opaque and wears well on its own. A lining is optional and only worth adding if you want a heavier, more structured fall.

6. What if the shade or the quality is not what I hoped?
An exchange is available if the shade or the quality is not loved. Screens do render colour differently, so a small variation between the photograph and the cloth is normal.
