The print

This is the busiest print in the range. The swirl and the flower alternate at close spacing so the surface stays active wherever it falls, and the pale green underneath keeps it from turning heavy.

At the base of the top and the dupatta the pattern gives way to a straight decorative band, which gives a stitched kurta a finished hem before any trim is added.

Wearing it

Because the print is continuous, this one suits a simple cut. A straight kurta, a plain neckline, no yoke seams cutting through the pattern. Soft green is easy in summer daylight and reads well under office lighting too.

A dense repeat like this is expensive to do by hand, which is exactly why most densely printed suit fabric at this price is screen printed. This one is not.

Small shifts in the print, a motif set a little off its neighbour, a shade that deepens where the block pressed twice: these are the marks of a hand at work, not flaws in the cloth.

A dense repeat is the hardest thing to ask of a block printer. Every impression has to land against the last one with almost no gap and almost no overlap, judged by eye, hundreds of times across a single 2.5 metre length. The Bhagalpur artisans who print these lengths carve the swirl and the flower into separate wooden blocks and work them in turn down the cloth. Where two impressions meet a little unevenly, that is the record of a hand deciding.

1. The pattern is so dense: is it really printed by hand?
Yes. A dense repeat is the clearest place to see hand work. Follow the swirls and you will find the spacing tightening and loosening slightly, and the odd motif carrying more colour than its neighbour, because each one was a separate press of a wooden block.

2. Will the colours bleed when I wash it?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash. Dry clean it the first time to settle the finish, then a gentle cold hand wash is enough.

3. What does this unstitched set include?
Three pieces: a 2.5 m top and a 2.5 m bottom, both 44 to 45 inches wide, and a 2.5 m dupatta 35 to 36 inches wide. Nothing is stitched, so your tailor cuts the silhouette you want.

4. Is there enough fabric for a larger size?
Yes. With 2.5 m in each piece the set can be stitched up to 4XL, and the length can be customised for a longer kurta or fuller silhouette.

5. How should I care for it?
Dry clean it before the first wear, then hand wash gently in cold water. Dry it in shade and press on the reverse to keep the surface of the print crisp.

6. What if the shade or the quality is not what I hoped?
An exchange is available if the shade or the quality is not loved. Screens do render colour differently, so a small variation between the photograph and the cloth is normal.
