The layout

The top runs a close repeat of small floral sprigs. The dupatta switches to panels, with larger leafing vines worked in green, white and blue against the brown and yellow grounds, and a linear triangular border closing the hem.

Two colour grounds in one set gives your tailor a choice most suit pieces do not: cut the yoke or the sleeve from the contrasting tone and the outfit gains a detail without any extra fabric.

Small shifts in the print, a motif set a little off its neighbour, a shade that deepens where the block pressed twice: these are the marks of a hand at work, not flaws in the cloth.

A panelled length means the printer changes blocks partway through the cloth, and the join has to be judged rather than measured. The small sprig, the leafing vine and the triangular border here are three separate hand-carved blocks, each inked separately, each struck by hand in a Bhagalpur workshop. Between the panels you can usually find the exact impression where the artisan changed over.

1. Is there enough fabric to stitch this for a larger or fuller size?
Yes. Each of the three pieces is 2.5 m long, with the top and bottom 44 to 45 inches wide, which stitches up to 4XL for a straight kurta set. Length can be customised for a longer silhouette.

2. How do I know the print is done by hand and not by machine?
Look along the repeat. Hand block printing leaves small register shifts where one block meets the next, and slight variation in how much colour each impression carries. A screen or machine print repeats identically every time; this one does not.

3. Will the colours bleed when I wash it?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash. Dry clean it the first time to settle the finish, then a gentle cold hand wash is enough.

4. What does this unstitched set include?
Three pieces: a 2.5 m top and a 2.5 m bottom, both 44 to 45 inches wide, and a 2.5 m dupatta 35 to 36 inches wide. Nothing is stitched, so your tailor cuts the silhouette you want.

5. Does it need a lining or aster?
No. The silk is opaque and wears well on its own. A lining is optional and only worth adding if you want a heavier, more structured fall.

6. What if the shade or the quality is not what I hoped?
An exchange is available if the shade or the quality is not loved. Screens do render colour differently, so a small variation between the photograph and the cloth is normal.
