The print

White leaves at small scale, worked closely across the yellow so the ground shows through as a glow rather than a block of colour. The dupatta eases the density and adds a distinct circular floral band along its lower horizontal edge.

The fringe at that edge is part of the piece, not an addition, so the dupatta is finished as it comes.

Wearing it

Yellow is a daylight and festive shade and one of the few that lifts an ordinary office day. Stitch it plain, place the circular band where it falls in front, and wear gold or plain glass bangles.

Small shifts in the print, a motif set a little off its neighbour, a shade that deepens where the block pressed twice: these are the marks of a hand at work, not flaws in the cloth.

Bhagalpur has worked with silk long enough that block printing here is a trade rather than a revival. The blocks are carved from wood for a particular design and then used until they wear, and the leaf on this length is one of the smallest in regular use, which means more impressions per metre and a slower run. The variation you can see between one leaf and the next is the printer, not the process failing.

1. How heavy is the set, and will a stitched kurta feel hot?
The top, bottom and dupatta together weigh 600 to 650 g, so it stitches into a light kurta set. The silk is opaque and needs no lining, which keeps the finished outfit lighter still.

2. How do I know the print is done by hand and not by machine?
Look along the repeat. Hand block printing leaves small register shifts where one block meets the next, and slight variation in how much colour each impression carries. A screen or machine print repeats identically every time; this one does not.

3. Will the colours bleed when I wash it?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash. Dry clean it the first time to settle the finish, then a gentle cold hand wash is enough.

4. What does this unstitched set include?
