The asymmetry

Stylised swirls and fish figures repeat densely across off white, with teal and charcoal grey holding the cooler end of the palette. The combination is asymmetric on purpose - motifs answer each other rather than mirroring, which is unusual in a block print and is what gives the set its movement.

The finish is matte rather than glossy, so the grey reads modern and stays easy to wear on an ordinary Tuesday.

Silk, fit and styling

Katan silk drapes gracefully and stays opaque, so no lining is needed, and the three pieces together weigh 600 to 650 g. It stitches to 4XL with the length customisable.

Grey takes silver, glass and oxidised metal better than gold; a straight kurta with a slim salwar keeps the print reading clean, and the fringed dupatta needs nothing else to finish the look. Hand block work on Katan silk from Bhagalpur is a combination the market almost never puts together - most grey block prints you will find are cotton.

How can I be sure this is hand block printed?
Look closely at the repeats. Every motif is stamped from a hand-carved wooden block, so the spacing shifts a little from one impression to the next and the colour sits slightly differently in each. A screen or machine print gives a flawless, identical repeat; this one never does, and that is your proof it was printed by hand.

Will the slate blue and teal bleed on the first wash?
No. The fabric is colour-fast and does not bleed on the first wash. Dry clean it the first time, then a gentle cold hand wash keeps it looking new.

What does the set include?
Three unstitched pieces: a top of 2.5 metres and a bottom of 2.5 metres, both 44 to 45 inches wide, and a dupatta of 2.5 metres at 35 to 36 inches wide.

Will it stitch for a larger size?
Yes. There is enough fabric to stitch a straight kurta set up to 4XL, and the length can be customised for larger sizes.

Do I need to line it?
No. The fabric is opaque, so no lining or aster is needed. Some customers still add one to elevate the drape, but that is a styling choice rather than a requirement.
